Happy Yankee Homecoming Week

GREAT OPPORTUNITIES

TO LEARN ABOUT THE U.S. COAST GUARD THIS WEEK!coast guard

GNAR Government Affairs chairperson, Mary Holmes, has been a member of Flotilla 38 in Newburyport for 20+ years, and this week Mary personally invites you to visit the Coast Guard open house tomorrow (Thursday) as a special event of Yankee Homecoming.

Mary is a National Staff member-Branch Chief Family Programs (2009-2013), she is also the chair of GNAR’s Government Affairs committee and is always seeking volunteers to assist her on the committee.  As past-president of GNAR, Mary has been an advocate of RPAC as demonstrated this commitment with her highly successful annual mini-golf tournament each June.  Through Mary’s efforts, and our engaged members, GNAR continues to meet participation and financial goals set forth by NAR and MAR.

Coast Guard Station Tours –
July 30 from 10 to 3pm

The Coast Guard Station in Newburyport stands as a testament to over 100 years of service to the opening of the Merrimack River and the coastal regions from the North Shore to Portsmouth, NH. All are invited for a special tour of the facility and get a close-up look at the inner workings of this very busy station.

Located on Water Street in Newburyport, the station is a base of operations for search and rescue of boats and yachts in trouble in a notoriously dangerous river mouth and surrounding coast. Considered home to the first Coast Guard station in the United States.

2015 Realtor Action Center Banner

From: Chris Polychron, NAR President
RE: NAR Call for Action on Patent Reform Legislation
IMPORTANT – One click is all it takes!CLICK LINK below to respond to this important CFA:
Call For Action: Stop Patent Trolls

On Monday, July 13th NAR launched a Call for Action to all REALTORS® asking them to contact their Members of Congress and urge support for H.R. 9 – The Innovation Act.

Why should REALTORS® care about Patent Reform?  You may think a “Patent Troll” can’t disrupt your business but individual REALTORS®, Brokers and Multiple Listing Services have all been targeted with vague and deceptive letters alleging patent infringement to demand unjustified payments for using basic technology like dropdown menus, website search functions, and even office scanners.

Currently a loophole in our legal system allows “patent trolls” to disrupt businesses, big and small, local and national, by demanding fees for the use of common business technologies. The Innovation Act – H.R. 9 – would close these loopholes.

While the opposition to H.R. 9 has been very vocal and is trying to delay the vote, our efforts to encourage a vote have been noticed on Capitol Hill and the House Leadership has signaled that a vote could take place next week. Now is the time to get every REALTOR® to answer the Call for Action and help convince the House of Representatives to pass this legislation of vital importance to the real estate industry.

Please take action. Congress listens when REALTORS® speak with a strong and unified voice.

IMPORTANT NEWS FROM NAR . . .

This week, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced its final rule regarding Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing.  The rule is expected to be published in the Federal Register this week and will take effect 30 days after its publication date.

Bottom Line: The rule lays out requirements based on Section 808 (e)(5) of the Fair Housing Act which requires the Secretary of HUD to administer the Department’s housing and urban development programs in a manner to “affirmatively further fair housing (AFFH).” The rule defines “affirmatively furthering fair housing”, and outlines a revised process for HUD review of state and local governments’ steps to comply with the rules. Please note that the requirements to affirmatively further fair housing are not new, but have been in effect for decades.

and THE WINNER IS….

2015 President-Elect Marion Spark named
REALTOR of the Year

Bob Pezzella of Evolve Bank and Trust
named Affiliate of the Year

rotyCongratulations to Marion Spark who was named REALTOR of the Year for 2015 last Thursday evening at the Phoenix Room.  Also awarded that evening was the 2015 Affiliate of the Year, Bob Pezzella.

Mary Parisella opened the awards portion of the evening presenting the Affiliate of the Year award to Bob Pezzella.  Bob Pezzella, as you may already know, has been a driving force in organizing network events throughout the past year.  This is the second time Bob has been honored with this award, having won in 2010.  Bob’s fellow affiliate members are always lending a hand to the monthly mixer series as well.  GNAR is fortunate to have such an active group of members!

GNAR President-elect Marion Spark was then presented the 2015 REALTOR of the Year award by MAR Past-President, Kimberly Allard-Moccia.  Marion and Kimberly served as Presidents at GNAR and MAR, respectively, in 2013.  Marion will be busy over the next few years as she continues to work with the Rotary and Chamber, and will be serving on the Rotary as President in 2017!  To view all the photos of the evening visit http://goo.gl/65htJ8

A big congratulations to Marion and Bob who both continue to move the association forward and foster a true community of REALTORS and Affiliates.

The celebration, with a Hollywood-style decor, was organized by the Events Committee.  Thanks again to Marilyn Berger, Lea Cabeen, and Jamie Dee Frontiero.
