FEBRUARY 15 – GNAR Newsletter Vol. 7

NEWBURYPORT PARKING BAN

(again . . .)

Parking Ban Effective at Midnight on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 (TONITE)

The Newburyport Department of Public Services (DPS) has declared a Street Parking Ban effective at Midnight on Wednesday, February 15, 2017, until Noon on Thursday, February 16, 2017, due to expected snowfall.  When a parking ban is in effect, DPS attempts to turn on the flashing blue emergency beacons located at major intersections across the City, 6-7 hours in advance of the start time of the parking ban in an effort to provide advance warning to residents, businesses and visitors.

During a Parking Ban, all parking is prohibited on all public ways.  Any vehicle parked on a public way is subject to ticketing and/or towing at the owner’s expense.  The City’s towing priorities are based on access needs for emergency vehicles (Fire, Police, Ambulance), along with the type and duration of the event.  Residents may park (free of charge) in city-controlled municipal lots until the ban has been rescinded.  Owners of vehicles parked in the municipal lots must remove their cars within 24 hours after the parking ban is lifted so the DPS crews can properly clear those lots.
Parking Ban status information is provided at www.cityofnewburyport.com or by calling 978-463-0472.

REALTOR® University Speaker Series

Immigrants’ Impact on Housing Demand and Prices in Some Metropolitan Areas – Alex Nowrasteh, Immigration Policy Analyst, Cato Institute

February 16, 2017, 12:00 noon–1:00 p.m..
NAR Washington D.C. Office, 500 New Jersey Avenue, NW
12th Floor Event Room
(Light lunch starting at 11:50 a.m.)

The United States continues to attract immigrants.  By the year 2060, nearly 20 percent of the U.S. population will be foreign-born, a rate even higher than that achieved in the early 1900’s.[1] The role of immigrants and their assimilation into U.S. society continues to be the subject of much study and debate. In this presentation, Mr. Nowrasteh will share his research on the demographics and economic characteristics of the immigrant population, the effect of immigration on housing demand and prices for some metropolitan statistical areas, and their prospects for homeownership.

Mr. Nowrasteh is the immigration policy analyst at the Cato Institute. His academic publications have appeared in the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, the Fletcher Security Review, and Public Choice. He is the coauthor of the booklet Open Immigration: Yea and Nay. His popular publications have appeared in newspapers such as the Wall Street JournalUSA Today, and the Washington Post, among others. He frequently appears on television and radio stations across the United States, talking about immigration issues and policy.

Mr. Nowrasteh has a BA in economics from George Mason University and a Master of Science in economic history from the London School of Economics. His research can be accessed here.
