Is REALTOR® Political Survival Worth It?

6/1/2011By Robert N. Authier, CEO, Massachusetts Association of REALTORS®

Last year, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 against the Federal Election Commission and in favor of a conservative non-profit group called Citizens United.   You can Google the details, but the case essentially opened the political spending  floodgates…allowing any individual, company or special interest group to spend unlimited dollars in support of candidates or issues.
Let’s make it clear.  The Citizens United case did NOT help REALTORS®.  We already have one of the strongest grass-roots organizations (all  members should respond to our Calls for Action). We already have one of the strongest Political Action Committees (RPAC), supporting REALTOR®-friendly candidates. But …. FROM THE MAR REPORT
Mass. pending home sales up in May over last year
Posted: 07 Jun 2011 07:12 AM PDT

Today we released pending sales numbers for May 2011.  The number of single-family homes and condominiums put under agreement were up in May from the same time last year. This is the first year-over-year increase since Dec. 2010 for single-family homes and the first year-over-year increase since April 2010 for condos. On a month-to-month basis, pending sales of both single-family homes and condos were up compared to April.

To keep these numbers in context, it is important to remember that last year at this time the market was being impacted by the home buyer tax credit. In order to take advantage of the credit, either a purchase and sale agreement or binding offer to purchase needed to be in place by April 30, 2010. May 2010, was the first month last year in which a home buyer, who had an offer to purchase a home accepted, was unable to take advantage of the tax credit.

Here are the highlights:

  • Single-family pending home sales were up 2.1% compared to May 2010
  • Single-family month-to-month pending home sales were up 12.5% from April 2011
  • Condo pending home sales were up 1% compared to May 2010
  • Condo pending month-to-month home sales were up 13.7% from April 2011

Help fellow REALTORS devastated by the tornados
Posted: 07 Jun 2011 07:02 AM PDT

It’s been almost a week since the tornadoes hit western Massachusetts and many have been gravely affected.  If you can help the communities and fellow members read on to learn how and see the grim photos.

Consider making a tax deductible contribution to the MAR Charitable Foundation as soon as possible.  The funds received will be used immediately to help our fellow REALTORS® recover.  The Foundation has already donated nearly $11,000 to organizations that can directly assist those in need. We will be continue coordinating the Foundation’s efforts with the local real estate boards serving the impacted REALTORS®.

CLICK ON THE MAR IMAGE ABOVE TO DONATE. Any contribution, no matter what size will help our fellow REALTORS® recover from this very unfortunate event.
